Sargeant, Sergeant - (John Thomas Sargeant) - by Peter Knowles
There are many books written about
soldiers during wartime and in the days
of National Service when young lads of
eighteen, from all walks of life were
called up to do two years in the army.
This book starts the story a few years
after National Service was abolished
much to the delight of many a young
man, so there was no reason why
anyone would want to join up.
It is not about bull, spit & polish,
basic training and the like, it tells about the antics, the sometimes downright
idiotic and the always amusing things that soldiers get up to both on and off duty.
John Thomas Sargeant was not an officer or even an NCO for that matter, he
never rose above the rank of Private, nor did he ever want to.
He had a secret to keep, that would see the end of his army life, if it were ever
found out, but what was he really looking for, why was he in the army when he
didn’t have to be, this is the story of his time in the army and some of the people
he met along the way.
Every Soldier and Ex Soldier will identify with this book and say
‘Been there, Done that’.
The crudeness of soldier’s speech and behaviour is a well known fact and is
represented in this novel, which contains details of a sexual nature and strong
language. Readers likely to find such representation disturbing or distasteful
are warned.
